10 Things Designers Secretly Think Are a Waste of Money

Hello Decor Friends,

Let’s have a little heart-to-heart today. As a designer, I love a beautiful space just as much as you do—but I also love a smart investment. Not everything that looks good is worth your hard-earned dollars, and sometimes the “extras” just don’t deliver the payoff we hope for.

So today, I’m sharing 10 things that, in my experience, are often not worth the cost (and what I’d do instead).

1. Matching Furniture Sets

I know they’re easy—but they can make a space feel flat and a little too “showroom.” Mixing pieces adds personality and makes your home feel collected, not purchased in one click.

2. Trend-Heavy Decor

If it’s everywhere right now, it might not age well. Instead of going all-in on trends, sprinkle them in through pillows, art, or accessories that are easy to swap.

3. Overly Expensive Area Rugs

Rugs take a beating—especially in high-traffic homes with kids or pets. There are so many beautiful, budget-friendly options now that look just as good without the stress.

4. Cheap Furniture That Needs Replacing Quickly

This one might surprise you, but super low-cost furniture often ends up costing more in the long run. If it doesn’t last, you’re buying it twice. Invest where it matters—like your sofa.

5. Too Many Small Decor Items

All those little pieces add up fast—and often create visual clutter instead of charm. A few larger, meaningful items will always feel more elevated.

6. Elaborate Window Treatments (When Not Needed)

Custom drapery can be stunning, but not every window needs the full treatment. Sometimes a simple panel or woven shade gets the job done beautifully for a fraction of the cost.

7. Over-Customizing Every Space

Built-ins everywhere sound dreamy, but they can get expensive quickly. Be selective—focus on the areas where they truly add function and impact.

8. High-End Bedding That You’re Afraid to Use

If it’s too precious to live with, what’s the point? You want bedding that feels luxurious and livable—soft, washable, and welcoming at the end of the day.

9. Ignoring Lighting and Spending Elsewhere

This is the flip side—people often overspend on decor and underspend on lighting. Great lighting transforms a room, so don’t skip it… but also don’t assume the most expensive fixture is the best one.

10. Buying Everything All at Once

This is a big one. Rushing to “finish” a room often leads to choices you don’t love long-term. Give your space time to evolve—it’s where the magic happens.

At the end of the day, good design isn’t about how much you spend—it’s about how your home feels. Thoughtful choices, a little patience, and a clear vision will always win over impulse purchases.

I’d love to know—what’s something you’ve purchased for your home that just wasn’t worth it?

Until Next Time
