How to mix and match pillows like a pro

Hey Decor Friends!

It’s been a rainy, gloomy week, but that doesn’t mean your decor has to be dull! One of my favorite ways to brighten up a space and inject some personality is by mixing and matching throw pillows. Ready to elevate your pillow game? Let’s dive in!

The Magic of Mix & Match

Throw pillows aren’t just cozy accents—they’re your secret weapon for adding color and style on a seasonal basis. The best part? Pillow covers are a low-commitment way to experiment. Swap them out for something new, fresh, or perfectly in tune with the season. It’s a fun, non-permanent way to play with color and texture, and it’ll boost your confidence as you design your space.

Designer Tip #1: The Rule of Three

Start with a trio of pillows. Experiment with different textures, patterns, scales, and colors until you find a combination that sings to you. When you’ve nailed that perfect grouping, step back, snap a picture, and let that snapshot guide you in creating a cohesive look. Trust me, capturing your masterpiece in a photo ensures you can always recreate that magic!

Your Pillow Mixing Formula

Here’s a simple formula to get you started:

1. Odd Numbers Rule: Our eyes love odd numbers, so begin with three pillows.

2. The Statement Pillow: Choose a cover with a large-scale print or a bold color. This one’s going to be the star of your arrangement.

3. The Coordinating Complement: Pick a pillow cover with a smaller-scale print—think dots, gingham, or pinstripes—to support your statement piece.

4. The Solid with Sass: Add a solid-colored pillow. But don’t let “solid” fool you—it’s all about texture! Whether it’s velvet, boucle, leather, suede, or even fur, look for a solid that’s anything but boring. Bonus points if it features fun fringe or banding!

Designer Tip #2: Perfect Pillow Plump

For the ultimate plush look, always choose inserts that are 2 inches larger all around than your finished pillow size. For example, if you have an 18x18 pillow cover, use a 20x20 insert. This simple trick will ensure your pillows look luxuriously plump and inviting.

Treat your pillow arrangement like a mini design adventure this weekend. Experiment, have fun, and don’t be afraid to mix and match until you find that perfect balance. I can’t wait to see how you transform your space—share your creations and let’s keep the decor inspiration flowing!

Until next time
