Pillow Talk: How Many Is Too Many?

ree

Hello Decor Friends!

Let’s talk pillows. Specifically—how many is too many? You know the moment: you see a gorgeous, pillow-packed bed or sofa online and think, “Yes, I need all of those.” Fast forward to your own space and suddenly you're removing 12 throw pillows just to sit down. Sound familiar? You're not alone.

Here’s the truth: pillows are like accessories for your home—they can make or break the outfit. Too few, and things look bare. Too many, and you're diving into a cushion avalanche. So let’s strike the perfect pillow balance!

Here are 3 playful tips to help you figure out your pillow sweet spot:

1. Think Odd Numbers (and a Little Restraint!)

Designers love odd numbers for a reason—they feel balanced but interesting. On a sofa, 3 to 5 pillows is usually just right. A king-size bed? Somewhere between 5 to 7. More than that, and it becomes less luxe and more where do I sleep?

2. Mix It Up, But Keep It Cohesive

It’s not just about how many pillows, but what they’re doing for the space. Mix sizes, patterns, and textures for interest, but keep a common thread—whether it’s color, fabric, or style—so it doesn’t turn into a pillow party gone rogue.

3. The “Sit Test” Is Real

This one’s simple: if you or your guests have to ask “Where do I sit?”—it’s too many. A few pillows should invite you in, not block your landing. Same goes for the bed—if removing them at night feels like a workout, edit it down.

Pillows should elevate your space, not take over. They're the cherry on top—not the whole sundae! Have fun playing with them, and remember, when in doubt: you can always rotate seasonally. (Yes, it’s the perfect excuse to buy more.)

Now tell me—how many pillows are you working with right now? Too many? Just right? Or are you a proud pillow maximalist?

Until Next Time,

Tatum
