Pumpkins + Flowers + Fall Magic

Hello Decor Friends,

This is one of my favorite fall accessories. And the best part, you can create and customize it for your exact fall color story. Styling a fresh blooming pumpkin arrangement is a fun and festive way to add a seasonal touch to your home decor, especially for fall. It’s a beautiful centerpiece that combines the natural beauty of fresh flowers with the charm of pumpkins.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create your own blooming pumpkin arrangement.

What You’ll Need:

  • A medium to large pumpkin

  • A sharp knife

  • A spoon for scooping

  • Floral foam (Oasis)

  • Fresh flowers (choose a mix of sizes, textures, and colors)

  • Greenery or filler (like eucalyptus, baby’s breath, or fall leaves)

  • Optional: Floral wire, shears, and a tray or plate for the pumpkin

Step 1: Pick Your Pumpkin

Choose a pumpkin that fits the size and shape of the arrangement you want. A medium or large pumpkin works well as the base of this project, but make sure it’s sturdy enough to support the flowers. You can go for the traditional orange pumpkin or opt for white or heirloom varieties for a different look.

Designer Tip

Remember our “odd rule”.Where will you be placing your pumpkin? Are you adding candlesticks, or other objects around it? These considerations will help you determine the size, and color of your pumpkin.

Step 2: Hollow Out the Pumpkin

Using a sharp knife, carefully cut off the top of the pumpkin around the stem to create an opening. The hole should be large enough for you to scoop out the insides but not too wide. After removing the top, use a spoon to clean out all the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkin, similar to preparing it for carving.

Step 3: Prep the Floral Foam

Soak your floral foam in water for about 15-20 minutes. This will allow it to absorb enough water to keep your flowers hydrated and fresh. Once soaked, cut the foam to fit snugly inside the pumpkin. It should be high enough to provide support for the flowers, but it should also sit securely without falling out.

Step 4: Choose and Trim Your Flowers

Pick a variety of fresh flowers and greenery that match your color palette and the look you’re going for. Fall colors like deep reds, oranges, and yellows work beautifully. Popular choices include roses, chrysanthemums, sunflowers, dahlias, and carnations. Trim the flower stems at an angle to the desired length so they fit nicely in the arrangement.

Designer Tip

You don’t need to be bossed around by traditional fall colors friends- use what will look best for your home.

Step 5: Arrange the Flowers

Start with the greenery or filler to create a base. Insert the stems into the floral foam, spacing them evenly around the pumpkin. Then, begin adding your larger flowers, arranging them in a way that spreads color and balance throughout the arrangement. Use smaller flowers to fill in any gaps and add variety in texture and height.

Step 6: Finish with Details

Once your main flowers are arranged, you can add any additional details like berries, twigs, or small pumpkins on picks to give it more texture and depth. If needed, use floral wire to secure any fragile stems or to adjust the height of specific flowers.

Step 7: Display Your Arrangement

Place the finished arrangement on a decorative tray or directly on your table. The pumpkin can leak a little over time, so a tray helps protect your surfaces. Keep the floral foam moist by adding a little water every few days, and your arrangement should stay fresh for about a week.

Enjoy your blooming pumpkin arrangement as a beautiful seasonal centerpiece that’s perfect for your fall home.
